Gatwick Airport enjoyed a 77 per cent rise in pre-tax profits in the year to March with record passenger numbers and long-haul routes boosting business.
With 40.8million passengers passing through its gates last year and pre-tax profits up to £141million, Gatwick's chief executive Stewart Wingate reinvigorated calls for Gatwick to be given the green light for a second runway.
Gatwick, which is Britain's second biggest airport, said 2.1million more passengers jetted off from its airport than a year earlier. And the news today that the decision on a further airport runway for the South East will be postponed until a new prime minister is in place could also prove positive news for Heathrow's rival.
